The practice of detoxifying the body to rid it of unhealthy toxins has been around for centuries.  Hippocrates recommended fasting to improve healthy, and many religious groups have historically used fasting as a way of purifying the spirit.

Today the marketplace is cluttered with detox diets that promise to help you lose weight, boost your energy levels and more.  However, many popular detox diets, especially those that involve extreme low-calorie fasting, can rob the body of important nutrients and place the body in starvation mode, which actually slows your metabolism.  Other downsides of many detox deits include:  dehydration, fatique, dizziness, nausea and even colon damage.

The Body’s Detox System
Oftentimes people don’t realize that the body has its own extraordinary internal detoxification system. Here’s a brief look at three critical organs involved:
·    The Liver: Your first line of defense against toxins is your liver, which acts like a filter in preventing toxic substances contained in foods from passing into your blood stream.
·    The Colon: This organ has bacteria that produce both healthy and unhealthy chemicals. You want to keep your colon flowing regularly since its main role is to flush out toxic chemicals before they can do you any harm.
·    The Kidneys: Like clockwork, the kidneys are constantly filtering your blood and getting rid of toxins in the form of urine.

For a detox diet to truly work, you need to maintain these three key organs by nourishing your body with the right nutrients. Dr. Oz’s 48-Hour Weekend Cleanse is based upon eating certain “detoxifying” foods that will keep these systems running smoothly. The plan couldn’t be simpler to follow so you’re not always focused on what to eat next. You'll need to prepare and eat the following meals and snacks two days in a row. To get ready for the weekend cleanse, print out the complete cleanse shopping list and make a trip to the supermarket.

Breakfast: Quinoa With Prunes
Start your morning off with a bowl of quinoa; this healthy whole grain is also a complete protein, and it’s high in phosphorus and fiber. Top it with prunes; they’re high in fiber and sorbitol, a chemical that acts like a laxative.

Ingredients
1/2 cup quinoa, rinsed
1 cup water
1 pinch nutmeg
1 tsp grated ginger
1 tbsp flaxseed oil
1/3 cup chopped prunes
1/4 cup rice milk

Directions
In a small pot, stir 1/2 cup quinoa, a pinch of nutmeg and 1 tsp of grated ginger into a cup of water.
Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover the pot and simmer for 10 minutes.
Stir in the prunes and rice milk.
Cover again and cook another 5 minutes.
Before serving, stir in 1 tbsp of flaxseed oil.

Snack Items: Detox Drinks
Enjoy these healthy pick-me-ups in between meals throughout the day.

Kale, Pineapple and Ginger Detox Drink (Juicer required)

2 large cucumbers
1 bunch kale without stems (4 cups chopped)
1/2 lemon, squeezed
1/4 inch of ginger
1 bunch of mint (1/2 cup)

Alternative Snack: Fresh Veggies

Radishes
Cucumber
Green beans
Olive oil
Lemon juice
Salt
Pepper

Directions
Cut up celery, radishes, cucumber and green beans.

For dressing, combine olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Mix well.

You can consume as many of these snacks as you'd like throughout the day.

Lunch: Fruit Smoothie
In a blender, whip up a nourishing smoothie that contains blueberries, loaded with quercetin, a flavonoid that boosts immunity and is good for your liver; bananas, full of vitamin B6, an essential vitamin for liver detoxification; and ground flaxseed, packed with brain-nourishing omega-3s and fiber for healthy elimination.

Ingredients
½ cup almond or hemp milk (plain/unsweetened)
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed or chia
¼ cup frozen blueberries
¼ banana
½ cup ice

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Dinner: Vegetable Broth Soup
This purifying broth contains fennel to help bile flow in your gallbladder; garlic to help with liver and gall bladder function; cabbage, excellent for detoxification in both the liver and kidneys; and shitake mushrooms to boost liver enzymes. Serve soup with a side of sauerkraut with sliced apples. Sauerkraut contains probiotics, the good bacteria that protect your GI tract. Make sure to use traditionally fermented sauerkraut to get the greatest health benefits. Apples boost both kidney and liver function.

Vegetable Broth Ingredients
2 red onions, roughly chopped
2 stalks celery, roughly chopped
1 fennel bulb, fronds and stalks included, roughly chopped
2 tsp caraway seeds
2 tsp sea salt
Freshly ground pepper
1 cup sliced shitake caps
4 large cloves garlic, chopped
1 cabbage, roughly chopped
2 quarts water
2 tbsp paprika
2 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped
8 sprigs parsley, chopped stems and leaves
1/2 cup parsley, chopped

Directions
Combine all ingredients, except for the chopped parsley, in a pot. Add 2 quarts of water.
Bring to a boil and then reduce heat. Simmer covered for about 1 hour. Adjust seasoning.
Remove whole parsley sprigs and serve topped with some freshly chopped parsley.
Serve with a side of traditionally fermented sauerkraut and chopped apples (warm or room temperature).

To get the most out of Dr. Oz’s 48-Hour Weekend Cleanse, be sure to follow these rules:
·    No Eating After 7 p.m.
·    Take an Epsom Salt Bath: This therapeutic bath will help you sweat out toxins and also contains magnesium to relax your muscles as well.
·    Dandelion Root Tea: Before bed, enjoy a cup of dandelion root tea, an excellent way for your liver to excrete toxins from your body.

Bonus: More Foods to Boost Your Body’s Detox Systems

The Liver
·    Dark berries such as blueberries and blackberries will make it easier for your liver to get rid of certain toxins.
·    Hot peppers have capsaicin, which boosts enzymes responsible for detoxifying the liver. As a rule, the hotter the pepper, the more capsaicin.
·
The Colon
·    Whole grains contain phosphorous, a natural laxative, and fiber to help bulk up your stools.
·    Fermented foods like kimchi (Korean spicy pickled cabbage) and sour pickles are packed with probiotics, the good bacteria that help protect your colon.
·
The Kidneys
·    Soy products such as miso, tofu and edamame all act like diuretics, allowing you to urinate more often.
·    Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, bok choy and broccoli increase your kidney’s ability to transport toxins into the urine and help liver cells recover from detox.

Ebb

Thank you Crysy for your encouragement, it means a lot to me!!!  You are very kind to reach out, thank you.

Well yesterday I weighed myself and was 170, that was good.  Today I'm 168 so that is better.  Now I have to continue with this downward trend.

What changed?

Well, last week was a long hard week where I had to take a vacation day in order to put in some more school hours, and stay overnight in the town where the school is.  I stayed overnight with another student who did the same thing.  She turned out to be a very spiritual woman who believes that everything happens for a reason and for her benefit.

Something she said that I can't remember anymore helped me turn a corner in regards to losing my first love.  Her belief in spiritual goodness and guides helped me have less skepticism and a little more hope.

While I was away, my dog was ill and so I have been worrying about him all weekend.  I have neglected my dog by not taking him to the veterinarian since I started the divorce in 2010, and especially since starting school.  So I see now that I really need to give him much better care.  So I am spending more time with him and I hope I've turned a corner with him too.

But I think it is the faith that things happen for good reasons and that there is more hope for the future.

Case in point,  the man I've been dating long distance, he booked a vacation cruise for us after school is done as a congratulations to me for completing the program.  That is very nice of him too and it does increase my motivation to just get through it.

So all in all, it has been a very good week, with people rallying around me to show me it is all worth the effort and I'm needed and cared for.  Plus this new extra motivation to look good while we are on vacation, will make the whole trip much more fun.

Unwell

Well as of this weekend I decided I have been feeling weakened and ill ever since I got that flu and cold the week of Christmas.  I just am always tired since I started school, then I got the flu and since then I just am struggling even more than before.  It's just getting to be too much.  I don't know what to do.  School will be done June 26, but I don't know if I can make it til then.

I weighed myself this morning, on my homescale I weigh 171!!!  That is shocking!!  I haven't weighed that much in a very long time, since 2011 I think?  Maybe I'm wrong but  anyway its a 30 pound weight gain since October 2012 and a 10 pound weight gain since 2 weeks ago!!!

I got my hair cut yesterday too, 10 inches off at one time so I could donate my hair, but it's just a bit longer than shoulder length now and I definately do not feel attractive anymore.

I bought a pair of jeans in size 12 last night becuase I just am so uncomfortable in size 10 jeans.  I am finding it hard to find tops in size large around the house because I got rid of everything as soon as I moved down a size.  This is a struggle in every way.  I am feeling very down and very tired and I just don't know what to do to help myself.

I pray.  I'm struggling with getting my homework done more than ever.  I joined lumosity to train my brain and my scores are sometimes lower than when I started. I'm just struggling.  I don't know what to do.

I got in a fight with the girl I drive to school with last week.  I don't know, I just don't know.

I am still in shock that my true love deserted me the way he did, I'm still not over that.  And yet I know I have to.  I know that for whatever reason he simply is not good enough for me and god wants something better for me.  I have to believe that.  I hate being divorced.

I feel such general malaise including feeling sick, that I even took a pregnancy test just to rule that out even though I knew the chances were highly unlikely anyway.  Yes it was negative.

I am dating someone very nice but he lives very far away.  He lives 9 hours drive away.  He hasn't seen me since I gained so much weight, and now with my hair cut.  I don't feel attractive anymore.  I don't know if he will still like me when he does see me.  I don't feel as sexy and yet I know I just have to change my attitude and start writing down everything I eat to gain control over that again.

We'll see. I have to turn this around.

Tide

Well another week of class is over.  Every Tuesday and Wednesday since September 2012 I have a night class after work.  It is so exhausting to me, that is when I stopped dieting.  Then in December the week of Christmas I got a very bad flu and cold.  Then in January I noticed I'd gained almost 15 pounds since October 2012.  In February I noticed I'd gained 20 pounds since October 2012.  Every day I can feel my clothes getting tighter, my bust getting heavier and even though I have been trying to stem the tide of this overwhelming weight gain I just don't seem to have enough motivation or willpower.

When I eat I feel like I'm starving, and craving chocolate like crazy.  So yesterday for lunch I bought a foot long subsandwich with lots of veggies and ate half of it for lunch, saving the other half for dinner.  But that was not enough I was just starving (I didn't have breakfast either) so I bought a brownie and a 10 oz hot chocolate and a 10 oz black coffee.  Still starving so I ordered an all veggie salad with fat free dressing.  That finally made me feel satisfied.

But I'm just so hungry lately.  I need enormous amounts of salad to fill up.  If I don't have salad close at hand then I fill up on a pint of ice cream, any chocolate I can find.  Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate the unending need for more chocolate.  I'm going absolutely crazy for chocolate and that is unusual.  I rarely crave chocolate and when I do its usually hormonal but this has been going on for over a month now.

So I don't know how much I weigh today because I'm too afraid to check.  I know I'm wearing every size large top I can find and my size 10 jeans are so tight they leave marks on my legs when I take them off.

I need help desperately to figure out what is wrong.  Since I started dieting in 2010 I've never struggled this much with appetite and craving of chocolate and weight GAIN bloating.  This is very disturbing.

Chocolate

Ususally I do not crave chocolate, only when my hormones are unbalanced, like right before I get my period. But lately I've been craving chocolate like crazy. I can't seem to get enough chocolate.  I'm a choco-holic!!

Continue

I wasn't being careful enough with my diet but yesterday I did have a large salad for a snack, instead of choosing something else.  That was a success.

I think the trick is to love myself, focus on loving myself and treating myself lovingly and remembering that the reason I want to be slim is to feel attractive and in a relationship with someone else to be able to let myself go, let go of self-consciousness, and allow myself to feel attractive and to throroughly enjoy myself.

Love myself so that I can enjoy myself.

Love myself so that I can focus attention away from myself and pay attention to others.

Being heavy makes me self-conscious, a cry for attention or a way to get myself to pay attention to myself, to try to figure out what is bugging me.

So the only answer is to pay attention to myself now, love myself now.

Ok, I will continue to repeat the mantra, and to try to feel it: "I love myself ".

Through

Well my last post was in October and I weighed 143.5,  today is February 2013 and on my homescale I weigh 163.5.  Twenty pounds gained. I've had a terrible flu and 2 root canals.  There are less than 4 months of massage school left.  I'm tired.  I'm disappointed in my weight gain and how size small clothes are so tight or no longer fit.

Last semester October - January I dated quite a lot, at least 8 people.  Now I'm kind of going steady with someone who lives 525 miles (8-9 hours drive) away and we have been on 3 dates.  I like him and respect him but its hard to date someone not in person.  So I am continuing to meet 1 or maybe 2 men in person also, although that doesn't feel right; so I'm feeling very uneasy about my place in the world.

About the time I stopped updating this blog I also stopped praying to the moon.  I still miss the man who was my first love like crazy.  That is the moment to moment grief I'm most trying to get through.  Not over, but through, to just move forward, knowing that love is there and that ache is there but just move through onward and forward towards the hope that I will be able to love again.

The biggest deal for gaining weight is how I'm just so unhappy.  I'm an emotional eater, and all this weight gain tells me I'm unhappy.  I just don't know how to turn the feel unhappy but eat the right foods anyway behavior on.  That's the struggle.

So we'll see, coming  back to this blog will help I hope.

I love myself
I think I'm grand
I go to the movies and hold my hand
I put my arm around my waist and when I get fresh
I slap my face.
