Leap year

2012 is a Leap Year!  That means I can ask a man to marry me this year.  ha ha.

According to British Isles tradition a man who receives a marriage proposal on a leap day, February 29, must accept it or fines may be levied to soften the blow.  The fines range from a kiss, to 12 pairs of gloves, to a silk gown.

However the deal is null and void unless she is wearing a red petticoat when she proposes.  Thats a good tradition.

Community Week 7

Well I've started working out with weights as of Saturday.   I'm an apple shape so hold a lot of weight in my abdomen, sides, back, shoulders and arms.  There is no way to spot reduce I'm told.   Well that's not going to stop me from trying.

Ok, yes I will keep reducing what I eat aiming for less than 1200 calories a day.  Ok I will keep trying to reduce my appetite, reduce my portion sizes, fight binge eating when I'm feeling stressed.  Yes last week I stress ate a lot; and this week I paid for it by gaining weight.  GRRRRRR!!!

So anyway I've started going to a gym to work out my upper body on weight machines. Discovered the the new inspirtion of seeing slim women with small bottoms working out and telling myself I'm gong to look more like that by next year.  That's great inspiration.  Thank you all small bottomed women who work out at the gym!

I started a pilates class this morning.  I'm enjoying activity for maybe the first time in my life.  I'm excited to see what changes I can create in my body.   With the knowledge that my body will lose where it wants to lose and I just have to keep eating less -- to a reaasonable point that is.

Valentines

Valentines Day is about love.

I try to see my plan to be slim as a way of showing love to myself, but in a backwards twisted way too. Being slim is about feeling attractive and having confidence, partly so that I can influence people. Hopefully to influence people to treat me better than I feel I'm treated when obese, hopefully to win the respect and love of someone to one day marry.

So is this love or the lack of it? I'm not sure. Maybe I need a parallel plan to learn how to love others better too. A plan for learning how to set boundaries.

This history (via National Public Radio) of Valentines Day is pretty racey:

The Dark Origins Of Valentine's Day
by ARNIE SEIPEL February 13, 2011

Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate romance and love and kissy-face fealty. But the origins of this festival of candy and cupids are actually dark, bloody — and a bit muddled.

A drawing depicts the death of St. Valentine — one of them, anyway. The Romans executed two men by that name on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D.  Though no one has pinpointed the exact origin of the holiday, one good place to start is ancient Rome, where men hit on women by, well, hitting them.

Those Wild and Crazy Romans

From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain.

The Roman romantics "were drunk. They were naked," says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile.

The brutal fete included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be, um, coupled up for the duration of the festival – or longer, if the match was right.

The ancient Romans may also be responsible for the name of our modern day of love. Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.

Later, Pope Gelasius I muddled things in the 5th century by combining St. Valentine's Day with Lupercalia to expel the pagan rituals. But the festival was more of a theatrical interpretation of what it had once been. Lenski adds, "It was a little more of a drunken revel, but the Christians put clothes back on it. That didn't stop it from being a day of fertility and love."

Around the same time, the Normans celebrated Galatin's Day. Galatin meant "lover of women." That was likely confused with St. Valentine's Day at some point, in part because they sound alike.

William Shakespeare helped romanticize Valentine's Day in his work, and it gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe.

Shakespeare In Love

As the years went on, the holiday grew sweeter. Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized it in their work, and it gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Handmade paper cards became the tokens-du-jour in the Middle Ages.

Eventually, the tradition made its way to the New World. The industrial revolution ushered in factory-made cards in the 19th century. And in 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Mo., began mass producing valentines. February has not been the same since.

Today, the holiday is big business: According to market research firm IBIS World, Valentine's Day sales reached $17.6 billion last year; this year's sales are expected to total $18.6 billion.

But that commercialization has spoiled the day for many. Helen Fisher, a sociologist at Rutgers University, says we have only ourselves to blame.

"This isn't a command performance," she says. "If people didn't want to buy Hallmark cards, they would not be bought, and Hallmark would go out of business."

And so the celebration of Valentine's Day goes on, in varied ways. Many will break the bank buying jewelry and flowers for their beloveds. Others will celebrate in a SAD (that's Single Awareness Day) way, dining alone and binging on self-gifted chocolates. A few may even be spending this day the same way the early Romans did. But let's not go there.

Community Week 6

I'm not doing enough!!!!! Get working harder, me!!!!  Why am not gaining muscle?  I'm walking 3 additional days a week now.  I'm so frustrated.

I had 4 bad divorce days in a row.  The person I'm divorcing is telling such outlandish lies.  And no one official knows any different.  Its so frustrating.  It makes me want to eat fats and sweets and eat no veg. Why?  Why do I react that way? (I'm surprised to learn a person can crave fats, too!) When he was saying all those lies in front of me, I had to contain myself because I just started smiling and laughing because the lies were so ridiculous that they made me feel embarrassed.  I knew that was an inappropriate response and my reaction made me look guilty.  I felt like such an idiot.  Why did i react that way? I think I was embarrassed in case anyone might believe what he was saying.  But it was all lies.  LIES!

How does a person defend self against lies?  I felt shocked and embarrassed, and later like feeding myself fat without end.  It was all I could do to keep myself from eating more than I did.  Help me God.  I mean it, please help me God.

Goals

In the past I wrote about giving myself little rewards for accomplishing a certain amout of weight loss or meeting another goal.  I do keep setting new little goals for myself.  Sometimes I meet them faster than other times.  I try not to worry too much about it.  Just meet the goal, goals without time limits.

Today I weigh 165 pounds which is the lowest so far.   So I bought two things, a reward and a goal.  The reward was a little beaded cuff bracelet.  Its like one I spotted on pinterest that I liked.  I got for no specific reason other than this week was tough, it was tough to fight my overeating food disorder.  That really kicked in due to the nervousness of the divorce stuff.

Through this whole fat loss journey one of the things I've been most surprised to discover is that at times I actually crave fat.  I thought it was sweets or salty foods that I craved but I realized its fats.  Sweet or salty, just high fat foods.  I'm so surprised to learn that is my main food craving when I feel bad.

One of the goals that I met in the past was to wear belts again.   So the other thing I bought today was for another goal, a skinny belt in a size Large instead of an Extra Large. The Large fits at the furthest notch.  So I bought it as inspiration.  I plan to wear it over a cardigan with smooth sides; no fall-over layer of fat.

Also good news is that my size 10 jeans fit well enough to wear in public and my size 12 pants fall off without a belt.  Even more good news is that my 1990s button-fly size 14 jeans fit easily AND my button-fly size 12 jeans fit easily too!!! So that's exciting.   The size I was wearing when I weighed ~130, before i gained that initial 60 lbs, was size 10 button-fly jeans.  So I'm getting there.   I'm excited for when I can wear my belted cardigan too.

There are still lots of goals for future hanging in my storage closet.  A pair of size 10 Guess skinny jeans from the 1980s when I weighed ~130.  Skirts from the 1980s size 10 and 12.  A cute plaid 1960s Wrangler shirt jacket that I found at a second hand shop.  But those will be a while still.  When I meet those goals, holy man, then I'll have really difficult goals to meet, to look good in swimsuits and little sleeveless tops.  I am excited for those upcoming days.

Community Week 5

Numbers, numbers, numbers. I love my new Omron scale, I really can see what is going on. But I don't love what is going on.  Since I stopped walking and running at lunch 3 days a week, my muscle is going down and my fat is going up and I'm hardly losing inches anywhere at all.  Didn't I start out with my very first measurements a 39" waist?

Obviously I need to exercise.  I am eating so much less though. Less that 1200 calories a day on average.  Why am I not losing weight faster?  Grrrrrr.  I need to gain muscle so that I lose weight faster.  That's all that is to it.

Plus its going to be a stressful week.  Exercise, exercise, exercise is the answer isn't it?   Why do I resist exercise when I know it makes me feel so good?  Meditation too.  Why do I resist doing what is good for me?  Do I really not love myself?

The healthy body fat range for women between the ages of 30 and 50 is between 15 to 23 percent.  The minimum healthy range is 10 to 13 percent; elite athletes are usually in the 14 to 20 percent range.  As high as 31 percent is still within the healthy range; but over 30 percent is considered obese.

Omron scale 168.4 lbs, BMI 28.9, 45.6% fat, 9 visceral fat, 22.7% muscle, need 1456 kcal to maintain.
